KANTIN
1st time having bornean food. Honestly, it is an interesting experience. Food was not too bad but just might not cater SG's tastebuds. Shoutout to the grilled octopus and chicken satay as it is very chunky, flavours on point and worth the value. Both laksas were equally good and would advise to try both versions if it is fair to wallet. Though, I felt like they could have used fresh prawns instead of frozen ones to enhance the overall taste of the dish.
The food is alright, not somewhere I’ll visit again as there was nothing mind blowing about the food. Their grilled squid has nice flavour but was chewy. Sarawak laksa used frozen prawns which was disappointing for a $24 dish, I can get better laksa elsewhere. Chicken satay and grilled chicken was nice.
The food at Kantin is undeniably good, but the service leaves much to be desired. The ambience during noon wasn’t the most pleasant, thanks to the glasshouse effect, direct sunlight, and tight seating arrangements. Our first impressions were underwhelming. Despite a lack of crowd on a Saturday afternoon after peak lunch hours at 2 pm, we waited five minutes before being seated. Staff did not notice us until we approached the payment counter, after which we were pointed (not served) to an available table. The QR code for ordering and cutlery arrived a few minutes later. Once ordered, the food arrived promptly, though not piping hot, perhaps typical for this establishment and the type of food they serve. The flavours were rich and complex, though slightly on the sweet side. The chicken skewers and wings were well-marinated and grilled to succulent perfection, with crisp exteriors. The morning glory was nicely spicy with a flavourful broth. The laksa leaned herby, requiring some getting used to, and became quite peppery after a while. The weakest dish was the squid, which seemed under-grilled, with slightly slimy texture that raised questions about doneness. The accompanying gravy did little to enhance the squid’s flavour. Drinks were ordered, including the coffee, teh C, and Milo shake, were excellent though the portions were small and the prices felt steep. Kantin is a place I would consider returning to, perhaps for an evening group gathering where temperatures are less of a concern and service would hopefully be more attentive, ironically when there is a bigger crowd.
Bornean and fusion dishes available and Food here is very pricey and tbh, we weren't that full after the meal. The menu pictures look very appetising but the actual dishes didn't quite live up to expectations. The better dish that we ordered was the Wild chicken chop. It was well-cooked and the accompanying crispy veg and tomato sambal (not spicy) were good. However the Salmon Island was not great. Fish was overcooked and the tomato cream sauce was nothing special. The place is cosy and service is ok as well. Overall, can try if you don't mind the pricing.
Just had an amazing experience at this place! 🤩 Sarawak Teh C was refreshing and authentic, hit the spot on a warm day. The Gula Apong chicken satay, the flavors were on point! Sweet, savory, and totally delicious 🍴 P.s. Timing was perfect, got there around 3pm and it was chill, not crowded at all 😌. Could enjoy the food and ambiance in peace. Highly recommend dropping by if you're at Jewel Changi.
