Song Fa Bak Kut Teh
For some reason, I actually prefer their cheaper bak kut teh option. Even though the pork ribs have less meat, I find it tastier, but that is just my personal preference. The soup is still very good, and a big plus point is that the refills are not diluted at all. I really enjoy it because it is very peppery, which is exactly what I look for in bak kut teh. The sliced pork soup is alright. The pork is super soft, though I personally do not enjoy it as much because it is a bit too soft for me. Again, just personal taste. The other side dishes are pretty normal. The sesame chicken was slightly disappointing as the sauce was too watery. I think it would be better if the sauce were thicker, although flavour wise it is still okay. Overall, it is still a solid place for peppery bak kut teh, especially if you enjoy strong soup with unlimited refills.
Had their lunch set priced at $13.90++, which was a filling and comforting meal overall. What I appreciated was the service. I was in a cast and on a wheelchair, and despite it being close to peak hour lunchtime, the staff kindly arranged a bench seat that was more spacious and accommodating for my leg. That small gesture made a big difference. That said, perhaps because we came early, the soup didn’t quite pack the peppery punch I remembered from previous visits. It was still enjoyable, just a little milder than expected.
Quite disappointed with the Bak Kut Teh I had at Jem, the pork rib was quite overly “done” and extremely tough and chewy and I can only imagine the cooking time is too short or the chef was too rush to serve the dish. The taste was totally deviated from the one I had at Chinatown and I felt extremely thirsty after the meal. I believe the management needs to align the procedure and ensure consistency in the quality of the pork rib, and more importantly, maintain the appropriate soup base, regardless of the branches across this island. For the time being, I doubt I will hold back my visit to Song Fa Bak Kut Teh JEM.
Tasty Bak Kut Teh and mild soup. The food are fast in servive and many choices to eat with. I love the fried dough when dipping in the soup.
The food was great. The restaurant was busy, but cozy. The seating is spacious and the tables are big enough not to feel cluttered once the dishes arrive. The soup is perfectly peppery - just enough to tease the palette and taste buds. The tenderloin pork in clay pot style is amazing and I would definitely recommend this dish. This branch is a perfectly accessible place and delicious taste of Singapore (or is it Malaysia?)
